US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to delays due to climate and other issues.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.
