Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Support Following PSV Loss
Arne Slot acknowledged that it was natural for questions to be asked about his position following another convincing defeat versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in twelve matches, representing the team's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie champions on a punishing night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I've received a lot of support from above,” the coach commented.
“It's important to turn it around and earn three points naturally but when you're coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He continued, “I am OK with my situation. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it is about time that we improved our results.”
Discussions with The Board
When asked to elaborate on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and to me and those talks happen but they don't phone me constantly each day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “In the normal conversations we have I perceive the trust. But I've not talked to them since this match so far so let’s see.”
Persistent Failings and Squad Reaction
Slot expressed regret over familiar failings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, namely poor finishing and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the answers. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” the midfielder said.
“It is not good enough. I don't have to wait to consider it. I’m past getting mad inside. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I've watched Liverpool for years.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a phase of this nature with outcomes this poor.”
He concluded, “However we continue to wear the emblem on our shirts. And until it is removed, we will always compete.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to where it needs to be, show everyone again the values of this club and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
