As Beachgoers Fled Violence, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic beach as her back yard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, along with numerous local residents, detected pops echoing around the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled something was wrong.

Positioned on the avenue, conversing with a couple who had rushed up the incline soaked, she heard someone approaching from behind. This turned out to be a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running towards something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, police and medical teams caring for many victims.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the incident serving as a temporary medical station. Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional lifeguards, stated that the team performed exceptionally from the second the incident began right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many moving narratives, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is incredible,” said a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit dedication every day in ensuring our internationally renowned shores secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
