Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with his partner, revealed that he will personally create this new flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent development deepens the ongoing conflict between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
âI'm doing what they couldn't,â Mr. Cohen stated from his kitchen. âI'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.â
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner â red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that âMy partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
