Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
