The nation's defense cabinet has voted to recognize the recognition of nineteen additional communities in the occupied West Bank, representing a sustained drive for settlement expansion.

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a settler who proposed the move together with Defense Chief Israel Katz, asserted that the move was intended for blocking the formation of a sovereign Palestine.

It is important to note that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are viewed as in violation of international law.

The move has sparked censure from Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "unceasing" growth of communities exacerbates tensions, curtails Palestinians' use of land, and undermines the feasibility of a sovereign Palestine.

Increased Tensions and Political Repercussions

Unrest in the occupied West Bank has surged since the war in Gaza started in the autumn of 2023, intensifying apprehensions that the growth of communities could deepen Israel's occupation and undermine the prospects for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The concept of two states involves the formation of a Palestinian state in the Palestinian territories, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, broadly along the lines that existed before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Upon assuming leadership in late 2022, the current government in Jerusalem has significantly increased the green-lighting of new settlements and begun the formal recognition for previously illegal settler outposts, designating them as "neighbourhoods" of existing communities.

Sustained Expansion

The latest approval pushes the total number of settlements recognized over the preceding 36 months to 69, per the figures from Minister Smotrich.

These authorizations are announced only a few days after the UN said that construction in settlements had attained its most intense pace since the year 2017.

The most recent group of approvals encompasses the re-establishment of a pair of settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated about in 2005.

Earlier this year, the Israeli government gave the nod to twenty-two new communities in the occupied West Bank - labeled as the most significant wave of approvals in decades.

In a related development, the Israeli government gave the go-ahead for projects last summer to build in excess of 3,000 homes in the so-called E1 corridor between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a project that had been frozen for many years amid strong foreign opposition.

At that time, Smotrich stated it would "bury the idea of a Palestinian state."

Population Facts and Global Reactions

An estimated 700,000 Israeli settlers dwell in around one hundred and sixty settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israel-based anti-settlement group Peace Now. This is land that the Palestinian people envision for a future independent state.

This ongoing construction has angered Arab nations who have repeatedly contended it harms chances for a two-state solution.

It has also sparked concerns about the possible incorporation of the occupied West Bank.

Former American President Donald Trump had previously cautioned Israel about annexation, telling TIME magazine that the country would forfeit its backing from the United States if it happened.

In a policy change, the UK - along with other nations including Australia and Canada - recognised a State of Palestine, a major although largely symbolic change in foreign policy.

Israel strongly rejected the move, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that a sovereign Palestine "is off the table."
