Israeli citizens mark two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A senior representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The official stated the morning session ended without significant progress, because of differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the both parties.
Key Issues in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war administration of the territory
Public Sentiment
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to show their backing for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis desire the conflict to finish in return for the freedom of the hostages.

At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to honor the dead.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks continued.

"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
