The British heavyweight doubled down on his much-discussed remarks about being prepared to “kill” Jake Paul during a news conference in Miami on Wednesday.

His words were first made on the previous day when Joshua was asked if he would hold back against Paul, responding that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.

The upcoming bout against the internet personality turned fighter has drawn criticism over safety concerns and the physical disparity between the two fighters.

Tyson Fury Calls Joshua a “Classless Loser”

Ex- world heavyweight champion The Gypsy King branded Anthony Joshua a “disgrace” for his extreme language.

But Joshua, explained his mindset: “It's my job, we fight. We have a licence to kill.

“I understand many people don't understand it but this is what my job is. I just enjoy what I do. Whatever happens, happens - provided that my hand is raised, that's what's paramount, respectfully.”

He added, “That's just the psychology we have to have as warriors. I'm unsure if other fighters think that way. Maybe they're a bit more tame. The way my mind works. When you're in the ring, it's a risky thing. Everything can happen.”

“You hope your opponent leaves the ring in good health, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed aware you just did your job. It wasn't personal.”

Paul's Fiery Retort

Jake Paul, a considerable outsider in the heavyweight contest as a career cruiserweight, was no less combative in his reply.

“This is a modern day gladiator sport,” he said. “I'm ready. I want his strongest punches. I want there to be no excuses when it's all said and done. We should kill each other.”

AJ will face his opponent, in his twenties, at Miami's arena in a fight many consider a major mismatch, with some arguing it should have been approved as an non-professional fight.

The official fight will be fought over 8 three-minute stanzas using standard 10oz padded gloves, with a stipulated maximum weight for Joshua.

Joshua Says He Was “Brought In to Rescue” Boxing

Despite the graphic terminology used, Joshua claimed he has been “called in to rescue” boxing.

“They want me to halt the Jake Paul phenomenon and I understand it and that's why I have to carry the sport on my back in this fight,” he concluded.

The news conference also had more humorous exchanges, with AJ laughing as his rival sang ‘London Bridge Is Falling Down’ to him.

The final staredown passed peacefully, with Paul striking a unusual pose before the champion remained composed and lightly grabbed Paul's chain.

Paul & Joshua Deny Scripted Claims

The unusual aspect of this fight has led to speculation about its authenticity, including claims that he may be prohibited from scoring a knockout.

“There's nothing in the contract, AJ can confirm it. We're going to battle,” Jake Paul insisted.

Joshua, wearing a expensive chain, humorously remarked, “The only thing in the contract that got my interest was the purse.”

He has claimed on his platforms that the total purse will be exceptionally large.

Largest Upset in Sport's History?

Jake Paul first made his name as an online prankster, amassing a massive online audience.

He has never fought anyone of Joshua's pedigree but maintained that his rival would take him seriously.

“It's a wise move on his part,” he commented. “This could potentially be, and will be, the greatest loss of his life.”

A win for the underdog would be perhaps the biggest surprise in the boxing's history.

It would undoubtedly leave an indelible stain on Joshua's legacy, but the athlete said it would not spell the end.

“I'd return again, move on,” he remarked. “I'll be headlining again in a couple of years. It is what it is. I'm a competitor in the game.”
