LA Faces Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just One Week After Major Winter Storm.
Following a week of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across areas in the city, LA is now confronting abnormally high weather for this time of year.
All-Time High Readings
On Friday midday, the temperature reached 91°F (33°C) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by meteorologists. This exceeds the old record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were labeled on forecast maps for the region.
Safety Alerts
Authorities cautioned that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice featured:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Reversal
This dramatic increase in heat comes on the heels of a powerful winter storm that battered the state earlier in the week. That system brought heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, causing evacuation orders for many residents.
Tragically, the conditions also caused a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead a cooldown is expected. The heat were forecast to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by late Friday.
Several cities that experienced 90°F included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Additionally, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to reach the high 80s.
For the weekend, downtown Los Angeles can expect readings in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the start of March.
