Our Household Alternative Game of the Year List for This Year
Well, what did you think of this year in your family? Did it seem all as good as people post on Facebook? Packed with academic success for your offspring and elaborate dress-up birthday parties for the adults? Or perhaps it was a swamp of letdowns with only sporadic entertaining flotsam? Is any of this authentic, or is everyone now AI-generated AI slop beings with perfect dental work?
I have gathered my thoughts for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to debate the paramount thing in a calendar year: which video games we were obsessed with the most. So here goes:
Title Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my games column."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "trying to find decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In the actual world."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Point taken.
Release Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into acting, but when she wasn’t singing, she was playing Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a successful utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Release the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he complains, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for mature audiences. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game digital pastime, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and realise it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my issues so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was last year's sleeper hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different joker cards are so inventive it has become a game I would happily play any time. Add in the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute pinnacle of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a wave of criticism when I mentioned how a technical issue in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I mention that verbatim, because I respect the passion, and he is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I acknowledge that it has great art and is flawless if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when most games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and high launch costs. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names called from the back door at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or phone use, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
