Taliban Utilized Abandoned UK Technology to Find Afghans That Served With Western Forces, Investigation Hears
An informant has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities left behind confidential devices permitting the militant group to identify local individuals that had served with allied troops.
Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger
Person A, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the information breach were told to move homes and alter their phone numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.
Members of Parliament are currently examining official management of a massive leak of confidential data involving approximately 19k Afghans who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.
The Information Breach Happened
An electronic document with their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and sometimes family information, was mistakenly released by a worker working at British military command in February 2022.
The leak became known only in August 2023, when details of nine people who had sought to move to Britain appeared on online platforms.
Militant Technology
“There seems to be this misconception that the Taliban lack the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have a contact number, they are able to track you down to within metres. That is what the unit accomplished.”
Under inquiry about regarding if authorities owned sophisticated technology, Person A stated: “They've got everything.”
Consequences of the Security Lapse
Preliminary research provided to the committee suggested that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been executed.
A legal restriction regarding the leak was implemented in August 2023 and restricted relevant facts concerning it from media reporting until recently.
Protective Actions
Due to legal constraints, Person A and the non-governmental organization she was working with advised affected households they were working with that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been breached”.
“We recommended that they relocate if they could and altered their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired these details, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
Person A disputed that government assessment carried out by a former official had been incorrect to state that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “minimally impact present danger”.
“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”
Person A described horrific violence experienced by affected individuals, including electrocution, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.
“We have had four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to force households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
