Two Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Ships Declared Unaccounted For after Setting Sail from Mexican Waters.

A large-scale search and rescue operation is presently under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Missions Launched

Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of 9 crew members, according to a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.
