Why Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid history in a crucial European tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
