Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to question particular calls made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
