The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately following his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain within me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
